Days to Know: September 2021
The Touchstone Diversity Initiative is spotlighting some significant events coming up in September! Please see the links below for more information on these events:
September 15 to October 15th is National Hispanic Heritage Month:
Hispanic Heritage month is an annual celebration of the history and culture of Latinx and Hispanic communities, commemorating how these communities have positively influenced American society.
Labor Day, September 6th:
https://www.dol.gov/general/ laborday/history – The United States Department of Labor has a basic overview of the holiday and it’s origins here, but what is really fascinating is the Hall of Honor section located on the website: https://www.dol.gov/ general/aboutdol/hallofhonor/ inductees
Admittedly, it may be a mixed bag of inductees at times, but it provides an interesting selection of people or groups that can help guide you in your own research into the history of labor movements in the United States.
Jewish Holy Days:
September is filled with important Holy Days for those who celebrate the tradition of Judaism. Including the Jewish New Year, The Day of Atonement, and the joyous celebrations that round out Sukkot! Please see below for more information on the history behind each event:
September 6 – September 8: Rosh Hashanah
September 15 – September 16: Yom Kippur
More information about the Jewish High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur here:
September 20 – September 27: Sukkot
