Shifting from Awareness to Acceptance - Touchstone

Shifting from Awareness to Acceptance

Autism Acceptance MonthAs April ushers in Spring, it brings an important observance–Autism Acceptance Month. This month is a dedicated time for reflection, action and most importantly, a shift in perspective from awareness to acceptance of autism. Autism Acceptance Month is not just about recognizing autism as a neurological divergence; it is about celebrating the unique contributions, perspectives, and potential of individuals on the autism spectrum.

The distinction between autism awareness and acceptance is crucial. While awareness focuses on recognizing and acknowledging autism in our communities, acceptance dives deeper. It involves understanding the challenges faced by autistic individuals and advocating for system changes to accommodate and support their needs. Acceptance is about listening to and amplifying autistic voices, creating inclusive environments, and recognizing the value of neurodiverse individuals.

In the spirit of Autism Acceptance Month, it is essential to highlight the roles and contributions of professionals who dedicate their careers to supporting individuals with autism. If you are passionate about working with children, helping them learn and empowering them with life skills, a career as a behavior technician may be perfect for you.  While many may not be aware of the role of a behavior technician, for those who embark on this career journey, it can be life changing.

Behavior techs play a vital role in providing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services under the guidance of Licensed Behavior Analysts (LBA.) ABA is a systematic approach that combines the science of behavior and learning with compassion to improve social, communication and daily living skills for individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities. At Touchstone ABA, behavior techs are at the forefront, delivering ABA treatment. They facilitate one-on-one sessions and group interactions tailored to meet the individual needs of each client.

For those looking to start a dynamic career in the ABA field, Touchstone ABA provides comprehensive on-the-job training and support. No previous experience is required and here at Touchstone ABA, we will provide the mentoring and experience to help you obtain the highly sought after national credential of Registered Behavior Technician®.
